This beautiful and rare Georgian ‘button’ brooch is set with the most stunning Rose Cut Diamonds in a cluster formation. The central Diamond is the largest stone with a surround of Rose Cut Diamonds and an outer row of further Rose Cuts to the edge. The Diamonds are set in a foil closed back setting which is in almost perfect condition with no discolouration. This was used to enhance the characteristics of the stones.
This brooch would have originally been an 18th century gentleman’s button, Georgian males of the period would adorn their outfits with Diamond buttons and buckles to display their status. The Rose Cut stones were cut especially to dazzle at night by candle light, which was the main source of lighting at the time.
Made in Silver, as almost all pieces were at the time with a Gold pin fitting which has been added later, probably in the late 19th Century.
The central Rose Cut Diamond measures 6mm x 6mm in diameter and is estimated to weigh 0.60 Carat, Rose Cut Diamonds spread much bigger than they weigh so the Diamond looks nearer 1 Carat in size. The total Diamond content is estimated at 2.60 - 2.80 Carat. The Diamonds are superb quality with the central stone being particularly clean and bright. The brooch measures 2.1mm x 2.1mm.
The brooch is in fantastic condition for the age and the Diamonds really catch the light. A very rare and pretty piece dating from 1780-90, wonderful for a collector of Georgian jewellery or to be worn and enjoyed.
Care should be taken not to get foil backed jewellery wet as this can damage the foil at the back of the stones.
